Overview |
 | Rome, the city of the Caesars and "La dolce vita" embraces its guests offering endless art, churches, museums, monuments and friendly Romans. Its sights and quarters are a lavish medley of ancient, medieval, Renaissance and modern buildings, covering over 1000 years of artistic history that you can enjoy just by walking anywhere in the historical centre and in the surrounding areas. Three lives are not enough to visit everything Rome offers but, in this life at least, you can study your maps reflecting over a quiet cappucino in one of the hundreds of beautiful squares to be found in this incredible and lively city. It is difficult to tell if these fountain-splashed squares and Roman bridges are more beautiful by day or by night when dining out, caressed by the "ponentino", a cool summer breeze that is really magic for both night walkers and people in love. | | The apartment is in Via Bixio, very close to Piazza Vittorio Emanuele, and just a 5-10 minute walk away from Termini railway station but well behind it. The Colosseum and the Roman Forum are barely 20 minutes away on foot, while the Trevi Fountain, the Spanish Steps, St. Peter’s etc. are a few stops away on the nearby underground/subway Line A (Vittorio and Manzoni stops). The apartment is in the quiet and safe Esquilino neighbourhood, where you will also find the best food market in Rome, just a block away. Useful information about the apartment, the district and various tourist attractions is provided. | | This cosy, colourful and sunny apartment is on the top (fifth) floor with 12 steps down from the lift. It’s on a corner and is well lit from both sides. It has a small entrance, a living-room with 2 sofas (one a sofa bed), a large, fully equipped kitchen, 1 bedroom with a queen-size bed and a bathroom with a shower. Each room has a small balcony and double-glazed French windows with wooden shutters. There are also two temporary beds, but only 4 guests can be hosted. Some easy walks from your apartment:
From your apartment, you’ll see a tunnel under the railway lines on the other side of Via Giolitti. That leads to Rome’s San Lorenzo quarter, quite different from the Esquilino district and only 5-10 minutes away on foot. It’s quite lively in the evenings, with ‘pizzerias’, ‘trattorias’, pubs, fastfood shops etc. as a lot of university students attending Rome’s university, La Sapienza (nearby), and artists live there. The main street is Via Tiburtina, and you turn into the cobbled streets on your right. In a way it’s a bit of old Rome, but not a tourist area, there are no monuments.
On the other hand, if you turn left when you leave the main door of the building and work your way to Via Merulana, passing by Piazza Vittorio (see the map), you’ll find it’s an elegant street with interesting little shops, and more eating places. Turning left down Via Merulana you’ll come to Rome’s San Giovanni (St. John’s) basilica at the end of the street, while turning right, you’ll come to the basilica of S. Maria Maggiore (St. Mary Major), famous for its mosaics, at the other end. On your way up to it, on the right side, you’ll pass Rome’s very famous bread, cake, savouries and coffee shop ( Panella’s ). Its food is irresistible and expensive, but worth the splash; there are even typical dishes of the ancient Romans. If you simply cross Via Merulana and continue in your original direction, you’ll reach the Colle Oppio gardens where the Roman emperor Nero’s palace has been recently restored, and then, straight in front of you, the Colosseum. Just a short walk from the Colosseum will take you to the Roman Forum and from there to central Piazza Venezia (Venice Square) and the shopping centre of Rome. | | Directions | 40 minutes by train from Fiumicino airport 30 minutes by bus from Ciampino airport 10 minutes on foot from Termini railway station, 5 minutes by bus - A1 Milan-Rome highway and A24 ends just 100 metres from the apartment | | Transportation | 5 minutes from main bus and underground 10 minutes from Termini railway station 5 minutes from main highways | | Airport | Fiumicino 16 km and 30 min by train |
